Batumi was founded in ancient Greece as a colony under the name „Batis“. It is derived from the Greek words „batis limin“ and means deep harbour. The Botanical Garden of Batumi offers a dendrological collection with 3,270 tree species, while the terracing of the mountainous terrain offers spectacular views over the bay of Batumi.

The Medea monument is reminiscent of the famous Greek legend about the Golden Fleece. Batumi’s main economic sectors are construction and tourism. It is also well-known for its Maritime Academy and Institute of Agriculture.
