The In­ter­na­tional As­so­ci­a­tion of Peace Mes­sen­ger Cities was es­tab­lished in 1985 with the sup­port of the United Na­tions to rec­og­nize and en­cour­age the role and re­spon­si­bil­ity cities have in cre­at­ing a cul­ture of peace.

Ro­s­tock has been a mem­ber of the net­work since 2017 and is the 2nd Ger­man mem­ber city in this as­so­ci­a­tion next to Friedrichshafen. To­day, the net­work com­prises 112 cities on six con­ti­nents. The aim of the as­so­ci­a­tion is to work for peace and in­ter­na­tional un­der­stand­ing world­wide.
