Kaliningrad - Russia

Friendship with Rostock since 1991

In 1946 Kaliningrad (literal translation: City of Kalinin) was renamed after the deceased Soviet Head of State Mikhail Ivanovich Kalinin without any connection between the person and the city.

Kaliningrad has many cultural attractions such as the Amber Museum containing a large collection of jewelry. The Königsberg Cathedral is also worth a visit. It is the only building of the former inner city that has survived World War II and is currently being used as a cultural center.

Inside are two small devotional rooms and behind the cathedral is the tomb of Immanuel Kant. Among Kaliningrad’s most important economic sectors are mechanical engineering, production of musical instruments, as well as chemical and food industries. Kaliningrad is also an important Russian shipyard location.
