The port ci­ty of Ros­tock

The port ci­ty of Ros­tock ce­le­bra­ted its 800th bir­th­day in 2018, and its his­to­ry is in­ex­tri­cab­ly lin­ked to the port and ship­ping. Fer­ries, RoRo ships, car­go ships and crui­se-li­ners are the mer­chant and pas­sen­ger ves­sels found in the har­bour to­day. With over 25 mil­li­on ton­nes of goods hand­led, mo­re than two mil­li­on fer­ry pas­sen­gers, and so­me 200 crui­se dockings per year, Ros­tock’s Über­see­ha­fen (in­ter­na­tio­nal port) is one of the Bal­tic Sea’s top play­ers.

Ger­many’s lar­gest Bal­tic Sea port, which al­so hap­pens to be the on­ly all-pur­po­se port on Ger­many’s Bal­tic co­ast, is one of Ros­tock’s best known at­trac­tions.

Set­ting a new cour­se

Fol­lo­wing the end of the Cold War, the re­uni­fi­ca­ti­on of Ger­many, and the ex­pan­si­on of the Eu­rope­an Uni­on, but al­so af­ter a dif­fi­cult struc­tu­ral shift in the 1990s, Ros­tock be­gan in­crea­singly re­gai­ning im­por­tan­ce as a tra­ding and trans­ship­ment cent­re in the southern Bal­tic Sea.

Han­se Sail Ros­tock

Han­se Sail Ros­tock is the world’s lar­gest an­nu­al gathe­ring of tra­di­tio­nal sai­lors and mu­se­um ships, cap­ti­va­ting so­me one mil­li­on vi­si­tors. 200 par­tici­pa­ting ships are joi­ned by crui­se li­ners, fer­ries and na­val ves­sels, ad­ding their own touch to Ros­tock’s and War­ne­mün­de’s uni­que vi­be.

Trans­por­ta­ti­on in Ros­tock

Whe­ther they’re go­ing to the theat­re, zoo or be­ach, Ros­to­ckers lo­ve to use their ex­cel­lent pu­blic trans­port sys­tem, con­sis­ting of an S-Bahn (sub­ur­ban rail­way), tram, bu­ses and fer­ries. Over 80% of all de­sti­na­ti­ons are lo­ca­ted ne­ar a tram stop.
